Pangngalang Tahas at Basal

Nouns in Filipino may be classified as pangngalang tahas or pangngalang basal. These are concrete and abstract nouns in English. The files below deal with distinguishing these two types of nouns. When my daughter was very young, I would often use the analog clock with her by saying things like "When both the short hand and long hand point to 12, it would be twelve o'clock. Time to eat lunch." She asked me how an analog clock was read to tell time. I explained to her that the numbers represented a multiple of five. When the long hand was pointing to 1 that meant that five minutes had passed. When the long hand was pointing to 2, ten minutes had passed, and so on. She replied that it was too complicated and expressed amazement that I had learned how to read time. I told her that she would also learn how to read the time after some practice. Kaganapan ng Pandiwa

One of the topics in my daughter's Filipino subject for the third quarter is the kaganapan ng pandiwa or complement of the verb. This post includes a discussion of this topic in English (with sample sentences in Filipino) and two worksheets on identifying the kaganapan ng pandiwa in a sentence and identifying its type. 1.
