Pagtambalin ang mga Pantig

If you will be teaching Filipino syllables (mga pantig), below is the link to a PDF file with 4 worksheets. These worksheets ask the learner to match a 3-letter syllable to another 3-letter syllable to create a Filipino word. The learner is asked to write the complete word on the rightmost column. The example given matches the syllables suk and lay to make the word suklay. Look at the preview below. Most syllables are of the form KPK (katinig-patinig-katinig). Note that ng is considered to be one letter (a consonant or katinig) in the Filipino alphabet, so a syllable like mang is a 3-letter syllable (KPK form). Pagpapantig Worksheets

Below are two PDF files with worksheets that ask the student to syllabicate Filipino words. The first set of worksheets are appropriate for first to fourth graders. The second set of worksheets are for fifth graders and older students. I did not make answer keys because as I have explained in my previous post, the syllabication of certain Filipino words are changed because of the syllabication rules of the Ortograpiyang Pambansa of the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino. As a teacher or tutor, you may choose to follow the old or new way of syllabication and check the worksheets accordingly. You may print and distribute these worksheets to your children or students, but you may not do so for profit. You also may not upload these PDF files in any other website such as Scribd or SlideShare, or cloud storage sites such as Google Drive or Dropbox. Pagpapantig 1 Pagpapantig 2

SYLLABICATION OF FILIPINO WORDS

A syllable is one unit of sound that forms the whole or part of a word. In Filipino, a syllable is called pantig and the syllabication of a word is called pagpapantig. When syllabicating words, syllables are separated by a middle dot called the interpunct (•) which is also called the interpoint, middot, or centered dot.

Syllable Forms
A syllable may be comprised of one vowel alone but a consonant needs a vowel to make a syllable. Syllables with two or more letters can have only one vowel. However, a syllable can have one or more consonants. The Filipino word for vowel is patinig (symbol: P) and the word for consonant is katinig (symbol: K).
